The first stage of respiration

The first stage of respiration takes place in the cytoplasm and is called glycolysis. No oxygen is needed for glycolysis to happen.

The second stage of respiration

The second stage of respiration takes place in the mitochondria and oxygen is needed for this to happen.

Fermentation

Fermentation is respiration without oxygen. The first stage is the same as in respiration but the second stage is different. The second stage happens in the cytoplasm, there is no oxygen and no ATP is being made.
